Great series for kids in the upper elementary and Jr. High range...but, really, I purchased it for myself, shhh, don't tell. The story line is just too well done, the characters fleshed out so nicely, and the humor is enjoyable. All this gives the entire Bone universe such a warm, exciting feel. I ended up purchasing the library binding of the entire set because after reading them all, I concluded our family can get so much out of multiple readings. My son is five and loves to have me explain the pictures to him. We are going to try play acting bits of the story together. A great alternative to electronic media, these books will wake up your kid's mind and revive your own stagnating adult imagination. What better way to transition children from hyper visual electronics to reading than combining the action-packed artwork of Jeff Smith with his epic writing. It's Lord of the Rings for kiddies. A decade later, looking for appropriate, gripping stories for my nine year old a very helpful man at "All in a dream" (which according to Yelp reviews I must have been appropriately respectful of his collection) proffered this series. I had thought "Bone" was some Disney crap storm along the lines of "Kingdom Hearts" (excuse me I'd rather play the quintesential RPG - Final Fantasy). Back to "Bone." Classic character types and good tension. Of course it is about good vs. evil. But what story isn't. There's thwarted romance, hidden lineage. You know the good parts from fairy tales and dramas. If only my son would read them faster. I'm glad he does read them though.
