There is a momentary pause between each "shush" so it is not a continuous sound like the hair dryer. When my baby is really upset, nothing is as effective as the hair dryer. Period. But the shusher is obviously more convenient--no cord, no blowing air, etc. I like the shusher but at this point, I use the HoMedics Sound Spa on the Go even more--the white noise function can be turned up loud and it's small enough to go with us anywhere. Plus, unlike the shusher, I can attach it to her car seat. And it's 1/3 the price. Just my two cents... **Q: is it worth $35??** A: No, we returned it as soon as I realized there are many apps for shushing that work even better without costing a whopping $35. I’m not cheap either, we have every expensive baby thing, the organic Snuggle Me sensory pillow, the crappy mamaroo swing (also returned), como tomo bottle, etc. I felt incredibly duped and quite frankly a little stupid for buying this before looking for an app. Currently I play rain and such for our babe to sleep. Sometimes I use a shushing app. The people staying how $35 isn’t a lot... $35 for this product feels like robbery... just sayin... get the app or spend money on a portable sound machine that has a wider variety of sounds **Q: Does this work on adults?** A: If they are really annoying and it's tiring to constantly shushing them then maybe :) The shusher slowwwwwwly say shusssssssh in a very calming manner repetitively. It has a 15 and 30 minute timer and acts as a white noise machine. For some adults it may, it is very relaxing **Q: Do you think it would work for a new puppy?** A: You know, I think any rhythmic background noise will work. I think that it is the way that the part of the brain that is geared to listen out for dangerous noises, is made ineffective by the constant randomness of sounds coming from this. It is as if, after a few seconds, it recognizes that it will not be able to hear anything anyways, so it just shuts down, and this alleviates the tension for the mind. It is like, "since we wouldn't hear it anyways, why worry". I could be wrong, but I really believe it. It is like rain, but they're we think that we can't hear anything coming, but there likely isn't anything coming in this mess, anyways! It maybe that the brain tries to find resonance with the sound as well.
