For being carbide, they need sharpening after a week of use. I am happy with them, just figured they wouldnt need sharpening that often **Q: How well do these stand up to acrylics ?** A: I don't know about acrylics, but I used the bowl gouges to hollow out a hard-as-steel piece of dried red oak and was impressed with how well they held their edge. I'm happy with the purchase. **Q: Why does the listing say carbide?** A: Because they are hight carbon steel not to be confused with carbide tips **Q: The description says the spindle gouge is 1/2", but it looks more like 1/4". ??** A: Maybe they consider the small gouge a spindle gouge as well. Yes there is a 1/4. I have never regretted getting this set because of the price. I dont use all of them. But I have had them for 3 yrs and still going strong. I turn pretty much every day. I believe the tools (each one being 16.3 inches in length), were ok for my small wood turning machine, but could have been smaller and shorter in length.
