Review: I've got these units on our family's sailboats to keep the starter batteries charged and they work extremely well. Unlike the house batteries that get more use, you don't need a high amp unit to keep starters charged as the alternator will top off the starter battery when you run the engine. And you don't get the problem of the high amp chargers boiling out the batteries. I've used cheaper charger/maintainers but they don't have the great marine quality cables and housing that these units have. We've tested these units and they all follow the right charging protocol to make sure batteries are charged right. I have three in service on 8AHr and 12Ahr AGM gel cell batteries. Bear in mind that batteries much above 12AHr will take a long time to charge at a 1.5A rate. **Q: want to use this on the crank battery to keep it up. Is it ok to permanently install knowing the alternator will put voltage on it when running.** A: I think so but I suggest you download the manual and see what is says about leaving it connected. Go to http://www.promariner.com/en/44001 then click on Tech Data and then download the PDF manual. Your question does imply that you intend to leave it installed in your car and unplug it from AC mains power when driving. Alternatively, you could unclip it from the battery and leave it home when driving which is what I would do. Mine is connected to my generator, from which I unclip it during generator operation. **Q: This charger gets hot. is it suppose to do that ?** A: I have three in service and none of them get "hot". They all run at essentially room temperature. **Q: The charger is heating up so much is that normal? Also I been charging my new battery since I got the charger and its still not going on maintenance** A: Fully charge the battery with a regular charger. This ProMariner is a battery maintainer and takes a very long time to bring a discharged battery to a full charge. Once the battery reaches a full charge the Promariner will do an excellent job of maintaining the full charge. When the ProMariner is in the maintenance charging mode it is warm to the touch. When it is working hard bringing a discharged battery to a full charge it becomes much warmer. In my experience it never becomes hot.
