They're soft but the larger ones work for applying lighter masques. The smaller ones can be used for desincrustation procedures. They did have an odd odor (kind of a mildew scent which might have been from the packaging) but it disappeared after cleaning and disinfecting them. Because they're soft, they will wear out more quickly than professional brushes but for the price, they're well worth it. One of the largest has a glob of glue extending into the bristles. Most of the smallest have too much space between bristles.
