He wouldn't be able to perch. He could just stand on the bottom, but I'm not sure if he would have to lean over. The parakeet is still too young, but this should be perfect. It's bigger than I envisioned, but that makes it more versatile for bigger sized birds or more than one smaller birds. I could actually fit my six-pound Chihuahua in it. The perch fits nicely in the slots on the bottom. Took me a few minutes to figure out how to open the feeding door on top. (Just push in below the two holes and lift up.)
