Review: Use a BATHTUB and leather gardening gloves -- works great! - We have had this ant farm for two weeks so far and we love it! The ants are happy and healthy and we can see the tunnels beautifully. I do like the idea of sand better than gel because you can clean the habitat and put in fresh sand and reuse it after your first round of ants dies off. Plus you get to feed the ants, and giving animals food and water is part of caretaking! So far, watermelon and lettuce have been a bust and apple and bread have been a hit. The habitat is well made and sturdy, and I have had no problems with escapes or stings. Lots of people have differing advice about how to put the ants in the ant farm, so I will share here exactly what worked for us. I carefully read all of the ant reviews, as well as the reviews for this habitat in particular, and kept the ants in the fridge until they weren't moving. For me, that was 35 minutes. They don't have much mass so they warm up quickly, and when I brought them out and checked them at 20 minutes they got so warm they woke up completely and thus the second 15 minutes. The paper that comes with the ant farm says you can't refrigerate them for more than 10 minutes or they'll die, but the information for the ants says that you can keep them in the fridge for up to four days. So you decide! Having read and re-read all of the reviews, I saw so many mentions of stings and ants escaping, I came up with a MASTER PLAN. I placed the ant farm in the BATHTUB before I opened the vial to tip them into the paper funnel. I also wore thick leather gardening gloves (which I would recommend). Everything everyone says about them crawling up the paper funnel is true. Also, they wake up at different times. There's definitely a delay between the first ant starting to stir and climbing out of the vial and the last. VIAL #1 I made the paper funnel long and tall and jammed it all the way down (making sure it was wide enough at the narrow end that they could still get through it) and even put tape on the side so it would keep its shape. But having to bounce the funnel up and down to knock down the ants that were climbing up destroyed the opening at the narrow end, and they couldn't get out it anymore. So it didn't really work out! I would not do this on your kitchen table. You will definitely get angry stinging ants everywhere. In messing around with the funnel I noted that the few ants that fell into the tub couldn't climb its walls. So I felt safe (and, besides, should things really go south I could always turn on the bathtub faucet and dispose of them in an epic flood... but they couldn't climb the walls and that wasn't necessary). VIAL #2 Ultimately I dispensed with the paper funnel idea and had my leather gloves and the vial and the ant-farm-in-bathtub setup, and just took off the cap and tipped and tapped them straight into the habitat opening. The ants that fell outside the habitat ran around my bathtub merrily and I scooped them up one at a time at my leisure using the tip of the vial, and then tapped them from the vial into the opening. Every once in a while I would switch to a different opening, so that they were dispersed evenly. I always kept the other two openings firmly shut. Having them run around harmlessly was easy. I could take my time and my almost-five year old could stand outside the tub and watch from a safe distance. I don't know if everyone's bathtub would work as well, but I thought I'd pass the suggestion along. For us, it was definitely a success! This is a great habitat and wonderful homeschool project. Note that doing this in Spring or Autumn is best, because of the temperature restrictions on shipping live ants. It's also easier to find playground sand when it's not Winter. So I wouldn't suggest this is a a Christmas gift!
Review: Don’t listen to the whiners. This is a great ant farm! - We’ve had this ant farm 48 hours & we have enjoyed how fast the ants work. It’s fascinating & gets the whole family watching the tunnels form. For those looking for an ant farm this seems to be the one. There’s people here complaining that it didn’t come with sand or ants. But it does state that, they didn’t read it carefully so because of their lack of research they gave this a 1 Star. Did they really expect ants would be living inside a box for years till it’s purchased? If you plan of gifting this, buy the sand (play sand) ahead of time. Also the kit comes with a coupon for the right kind of ants (harvesting) so if you’re smart.. get the kit, open it to use the coupon online, close the box back up. Buy the sand while it takes a week for the ants & that way your child will have everything come that special day. People are so hung up about telling their child to wait for the ants to arrive they forget a lesson could be learned.. called patience. Our boys had the kit 2 weeks before getting the sand & ants to finally set up. You know what? No one died! In fact they were more excited because of the anticipation. So I give this 5 stars. If you read the directions it tells you not to drop water in it because it can get moldy. To the person who got mold.. you didn’t read the directions.. or you got the wrong sand. You are to use the dropper given & only a few drops every other day is enough. Play sand is moist & easy to manipulate for the ants. Another tip. Put the ants in the fridge for 5 minutes before adding them to the habitat. No longer or you’d kill them. Cooling them down helps getting them in with out them falling all over the counter. I got bit hard & my finger swelled & turned red. Throbbed & on fire for 6 hours but I’m still giving this a 5 star because that was my mistake for thinking they don’t bite. Just be careful. Best to cool them down first so they slide right into the opening. To those who complain about ants climbing out. Nonsense. They don’t suddenly jump out when you open the hatch to drop in food or water. This is great for classrooms & observing at home but definitely an adult should do the assembly & maintenance.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: How do we get the leftover food/dead ants out of there easily without taking it all apart?**
A: Hi BrianSorry for the delay, I had to do some research, but found this recommendation:First you will need to calm the ants down by placing the Ant Factory in a refrigerator for up to 10 minutes. When you get the ant farm out, the ants might look dead, but after warming up, they will start moving again and they might move quite fast. While you open the Ant Factory, you could place the it in a big Tupperware container coated with Vaseline- which makes the surfaces slippery for ants to crawl up. I would recommend opening the chamber closest to where the dead ants or leftover food are located. Remove the dead ants and leftover food using either a long cotton tip applicator or stick. The rake/tunnel starter that is included in the kit can also be used.If ants escape from the farm, they will still stay in the Tupperware container and you can collect them with a cotton tip applicator or stick. You can always refill the Ant Factory with new sand, but be sure to moisten the sand a bit so that the remaining ants to build new tunnels.Hope that helps!

**Q: How often do you have to feed the ants?**
A: A tiny amount of food (think bread crumbs or specks of lettuce leaf) every 3 days. And a few drops of water from the pipette included. Any food that’s too wet will rot, so don’t do watermelon.

**Q: can i order the white sand separately**
A: It didn’t come with sand. I believe my son did order it separately

**Q: Can the background image showing the gears and such in a variety of colors be removed?**
A: I don't think the image can be removed. It's been a while since I purchased this item for my son, and he donated it to someone else several years ago so I'm answering your question off the top of my head, but from what I can remember- No. The item would have to be taken completely apart in order to alter the image and remove the gears. And if taken apart, removing the gears would make the item non-functional and allow the ants to escape. Hope this helps!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Fun for kids, had a leak
*by A***I on April 27, 2023*

Minus 1 star because sand leaked out of the bottom corner. Super glue fixed this in a pinch. I was glad I read other reviews and did this in the bathtub with a hand held vacuum on standby. They went from not moving at all in the refrigerator to becoming extremely active as I poured them out. Luckily we had no escapees, but it was close. The booklet that comes with has nice information ants and experiment/study ideas .
