At least once a month, using it only 2 to 4 times a day to lock / unlock the front door seems a bit much to have to keep replacing the batteries.I first turned to the obvious... rechargeable. With those, I wasn't buying batteries as often, but I had to replace them more often. And with conventional rechargeable, I was basically only getting 1.2V per battery anyway (4.8v total vs 6v on alkaline), so 4.5v seemed it should reasonably work for this application.When I plugged this thing in with all the supplied pieces, nothing happened. What???----Well... this thing comes with 1 x 4.5v AAA battery adapter with thin-ribbon wiring, and 3 dummy batteries. The 3 dummy batteries are basically just a wire running from terminal to terminal, slightly spring loaded from the tension in the wire, like a glorified paper clip. You would think you couldn't screw that up. I was wrong. I ran a multi-meter to check the voltage on the adapter, then the short in each one... and sure enough, one of them did not short!!! I was tempted to return it there and then, just for that. But I didn't.With the supplied materials fixed, it was okay... barely. That's when I figured I would have the ingenious idea of replacing one of the dummy batteries with a rechargeable. Better. So if 1 is good, then 3 is better right? haha. Why not use 0 dummies, 3 rechargeable, and the power adapter? I decided to test that, so in theory, the normally 6v battery compartment would be using 4.5v 1A of adapter power and 3 x 1.2v rechargeable (giving me a theoretical 8.1v total).I'm an utter genius. The extra 2 volts really made the motor work like you would expect a door lock to run. And since this thing doesn't run constantly, like lights or something like that, I shouldn't expect a fire hazard to build up in the wiring. Better still, every time I lock and unlock the door, it would theoretically also trickle-charge the rechargeables...I'll update this review if my door catches fire, but I really don't think that'll happen. So I'm keeping it, all things considered. But truth is, with the poor construction, I would buy the other one (which is also cheaper) if I had to do it all over again. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars A True Money Saver *by C***S on Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2022* Great not to have to keep buying replacement batteries!!! I have been using this item for over 2 years now. I discovered it at a local store near me but it is cheaper on Amazon. This item is GREAT for my battery operated flameless candles. If you are buying this for larger items like a kitchen clock etc, I can't say if it will work however its great for small battery operated items. A real money saver. You only need two, though I suppose it's good to have a spare in case you lose one.Main thing to know. AAA batteries are 1.5v. When you use any adapter like this to replace real batteries, you look at what's in the device and add up the voltage. We needed three AAA's, which is 4.5v (1.5 x 3).This means the adapter is only meant for a device that uses three AAA batteries.If you use only the wired battery in a device that uses one regular AAA battery, you will be feeding it 4.5v when it's expecting 1.5v. In other words, you'll burn out the device. If you use all four (the wired and all three blanks), it's still only going to put out a total of 4.5v when that device is expecting 6v. Putting in all three blanks can't make a 4.5v adapter magically output 6v.Used correctly with three batteries (wired and two blanks), it's great.
