Prior to that he was Vice President 1969-79 during Ahmad Hasan al-Bakr's reign, as well as the Prime Minister 1979-1991 and 1994. His regime was overthrown on April 9, 2003 when US troops under The Iraq war took Baghdad and was imprisoned on December 13 that year after being located in a hideaway outside Tikrit.
