It is not removable and we did that on purpose to make it more resistant. **Q: Is this as good as the flight aware antenna? Any differences?** A: Okay, this may not be of much help, but currently we use the AirNav RadarBox flight stick with an indoor antennae (a really cheap one) which is excellent when we are away. We use the outdoor one when we are at home and it picks up practically everything within 200 miles plus. I have no idea about the Flight Aware, but the AirNav suits us fine. I hope that helps... **Q: I’m currently using this antenna at 1090, how does it perform at 978Mhz?** A: There's a different antenna for that purpose. **Q: Is it possible/reasonable to diplex (use 2 antennas with combiner) to avoid tower shadow? Would losses outweigh benefit?** A: Yes you can combine two of them and the losses would not outweigh the benefit. They need to be in exact phase or you will introduce additional directivity in the pattern. IIRC you will want to use two equal length cables of 75 ohm into a combiner with a 50ohm feedline to your receiver. That will co-phase them. Worth reading about beamforming, phasing, and combining. Wish I got this sooner. *by R***S on June 7, 2019* Purchased this to upgrade from a smaller magnetic antenna, I kept looking for reviews showing what kind of change to expect. See my screenshot, using this this indoors (garage), it’s connected to a RPI with a band pass filter, I went from getting almost no positions beyond 50 miles. In my screenshot graph, I’m now getting almost twice the positions greater than 50 miles away than ALL the positions under 50 miles away. This came with hardware to mount to a pole, I mounted it to a tall storage rack in the garage. Which worked great with the long cable it comes with to keep the RPI within easy each of an electrical outlet and arms reach now.
