    Beauty for Its Own Sake

*by J***N on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on January 20, 2015*

This is my very first purchase from Amazon and I'm very happy with the service and early delivery. Five stars for Amazon! The teapot was so securely wrapped that releasing it from its multi-layered cocoon of bubble wrap was quite a challenge. I'm so impressed that I will no longer hesitate to buy breakables from Amazon. So why only four stars? My grouse is with the product itself.First the good stuff. The teapot is heart-stoppingly beautiful, and very sturdily made. Preheated it before brewing tea. No cracks, no crazing, as has been known to happen with new teapots. Took it for a spin in the microwave for 5 minutes on half power, whilst filled with hot tea. So far, so good. Haven't tested it in the oven though. I'll take their word for it, that it's oven proof as well. It also kept my tea nice and hot for almost an hour, without a tea cosy on, probably because it is thick walled. It looks perfectly proportioned, is beautifully shaped and the artwork is really refined, so unlike all the made-in-China crap that is so prevalent now. Everything from the paintwork to the curve of the handle, and the dainty coiled finial on the lid is just stunning! It has a capacity of 3 1/2 standard teacups (NOT mugs), very close to the stated capacity. It is honestly, my most beautiful teapot at the moment. Now the bad. My first issue is with the lid, which is a very poor fit. It almost looks and feels like it was meant for a different teapot, though of course it isn't as the artwork is a perfect match to the pot itself. It wobbles, it slides around and there's a noticeable gap all around, between the lid and the top rim of the pot. When pouring, you must hold on to the lid, or it will fall off, in spite of the tab that's supposed to fit under the flange on the inside of the teapot rim and keep it in place. It doesn't fit or stay in place because the lid is too small for the pot, and the ridged (scalloped?) design of the pot rim doesn't provide an even flat surface for the lid to rest on. It could be a one-off and I may well have received a faulty piece, but it does make me wonder about quality control at the factory/pottery itself, bearing in mind, that this is not a cheap teapot. My second grouse is that the spout pours poorly, when the pot is filled close to or at capacity, and causes annoying drips down the spout, which have already stained my tea towel and tea cosy. It's less drippy when the liquid level falls to half full or less. This could be because there isn't that little hole in the lid, which you often see in older teapots from bygone decades. This hole is said to prevent drips when pouring, owing to some principle of physics, which I'm sure I do not understand. However, owning quite a few vintage teapots myself, which do have this little hole in the lid, I can say from experience, that this principle seems to be true. Another reason it does not pour well, could be that the profile of the spout tip, is wrong; perhaps it is too straight, too horizontal and should have more of a downward curve. I've found that my best pouring teapots are the ones that have both a downward curving spout tip and that little hole in the lid.Two final things to note. As mentioned earlier, this pot is sturdy, thick-walled and quite weighty for its size, even when empty. When full of liquid it is on the heavy side, though this isn't a major issue for me. Also, this pot does not come with a filter. So, if you use only loose leaf tea, it's going to be an inconvenience. Again, not a deal breaker for me.My four star rating is based on Amazon's fantastic service and the sheer beauty of this lovely pot. I'm a sucker for anything beautiful, so I'm keeping it, though the ill fitting lid and drips do annoy me each time I use it. However, if you're looking for a teapot that functions as well as it is beautiful, you might want to consider something else.

    A truly beautiful teapot

*by L***Z on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on January 20, 2013*

This teapot is exquisite. You can really tell that it was hand-painted. It's also delicate without feeling so fragile that I'm afraid it's going to break anytime I handle it. The size given is accurate, the teapot has a maximum capacity of 30oz. but only has a usable capacity of 26oz.Whenever one buys this kind of item online getting it in one piece is of utmost concern and I'm pleased to say that my teapot arrived quickly and was very well packed. Each piece was wrapped in paper individually and then the whole thing was packed so many air packs that it was almost ridiculous. End result; I don't think that teapot move during shipping once.
