This is a basic futon, with no frills. The assembly process took a while, because as some people have said, the directions are not the most clear in the world; however, it wasn't that bad. Just takes some attention to detail. The boards were clean and straight, except for one that was slightly warped. Smooth, but probably will take a little fine sanding before they'll truly be ready for staining, which I haven't done yet.The 9-inch mattress is a basic mattress; it's not ultra cushiony, but you don't expect that from a futon mattress. It does the job, and you don't feel the slats underneath at all. This is an ugly mattress, so you'll want to purchase a cover for it. If you buy this futon without the mattress and get a separate mattress, I would not get anything bigger than 9 inches, because it seems to me that 10 inches would not look very good when the futon is in the sitting position; 9 is pushing it, but it looks fine. The wood is very sturdy and of good, high quality. The mattress was nicely padded, so it was comfortable for sleeping or as a couch. I didn't assemble it, my husband did, so I can't tell you anything about the ease of directions or assembly - but it took him about an hour to put together, and I would say that about the way he was going about it, it has an assembly ease of medium. It is very lovely, and of course, since it's wood, it goes with just about any type of decor. Be warn though, the mattress does not come with a futon cover like the one shown in the picture. It does come with a mattress.
