I have read all of Ice Planet Barbarians, am up to date on Ice home, and now find myself in the middle of the fire blood series. I like the books and the author's style obviously. But I noticed something that REALLY REALLY bothers me. While I absolutely appreciate that the author makes it a point to be racially diverse with the women, I couldn't help but notice that the books where the lead female is black are not written with the same amount of "energy" for lack of a better word when it comes to the personal things. For example: Tiffany in Ice Planet Barbarians was constantly remarked upon for her beauty, which was very nice. But then it was ruined by a very awkward, and stilted story line. And then she just disappeared of the face of the earth! It was like her story was a struggle to write, that when it was done, the author let out a sigh of relief, put her in a corner, and never looked at her again. She is hardly ever mentioned, and makes almost zero appearances in other stories. Example #2 Is Nadine's story. It was cute, but nothing great. I wasn't left feeling a great emotional attachment to her love interest like the other books, and the sexy scenes in my opinion left something to be desired if you compare them to the books that came before. Example #3: Don't even get me started on Gail. A novella? Really? Everyone else gets their own whole ass story and she gets a novella? Right. Ok. And now here we are with Gwen....the wishy washy, constantly doubting herself, OBVIOUS bad decisions....uuuggh! Just. No. The character portrayed for 90% of the book does not match up to what I would expect from the woman that lead a rescue and successfully (although not without its problems) set down roots and established a new fort/ colony. The mindset of Gwen in the last hew chapters is the Gwen I wish the author had given us from the beginning. She didn't have to have it all figured out, but some assertiveness/confidence would have been really nice. I read all of the author's comments at the end of each book. This is the first time that I can recall that she didn't even TALK about the main characters AT ALL. Just weird. Anyone who loves to read as much as I do can probably agree that its really nice to either see themselves in a character or be able to relate to them through their experiences. I always get excited when I see books that have black women in them because it makes me feel like the author really tried to establish a connection with me as a reader. I really tried not to make a mountain out of a mole hill, but I am EXTREMELEY observant. And it just became too hard to ignore after awhile. I don't know if the author is really trying to connect with the black female leads and just missing the mark, if it isn't on her radar at all, or what. But I felt I really needed to speak on it because I'd like to see that dynamic change. Other than the obvious issues I brought up, I did enjoy this book. So four stars it is! Just an honest opinion from a fan. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Just love a continuing series and can’t wait until the next one! *by G***A on Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2021* Written for mature readers only (18+ years old) due to subject matter that may be a trigger or offensive to some including adult language, steamy intimate scenes and violence.This is the 5th story in the series, and due to multiple reoccurring characters and an overall storyline arc, I highly recommend these be read in series order for maximum reader satisfaction and to prevent spoilers.I continue to enjoy this series. Since the stories continue one after another, the story universe and characters are well developed. There are also minimal grammatical issues, which I really appreciate.Gwen is the mayor of Fort Shreveport. She helped establish it with several other women and children when they left their previous fort due to the treatment of women. The idea was to leave it open to others looking for a safe place to stay in the After (after the Dragons came through the rift in 2016 and started destroying everything in their path).Unfortunately that backfired when nomads came through and started demanding tithes and took her sister to make sure they received what they considered their due.Now to make things worse, a big yellow dragon has decided to attack. Amy and Rast, a mated pair from a previous story, has arrived and want to help with the nomads. They also explain that Vaan, the Dragon, is looking for his mate and that he will not stop until she comes out. One of the roommates of Gwen decides that the Dragon must be there for her and decides to go out and meet him.Gwen goes with Andrea and everything goes fine until the actual Dragon shows up. He is a lot bigger than either one expects. Andrea faints and Gwen hides and is frozen for a minute before recovering. She gets Andrea to run and Gwen uses her pepper spray on him so she can run away as well. Unbeknownst to her, the Dragon interprets her actions as a form of mating challenge that he is all to happy to accept. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ fix the covers *by C***O on Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2022* This woman’s writing is great but I overlooked her books more than once because the covers are god awful.
