The best ongoing Godzilla series thus far.

Ever since IDW began producing Godzilla comics, many of them have been hits and misses. Thankfully, this is a hit. As a long time Godzilla fan, I say this is a comic for us G-fans. It has wonderful art by Matt Frank (with additional works by Jeff Zornow), a fun simple story by Chris Mowry, returning Toho monsters, and more of Godzilla! As far as the plot goes, it's not really that special in terms of story. There is a "mega-zoologist" named Lucy Casprell who goes around trying to study the monsters all around the world. In the meantime, aliens are trying to take over the planet. Godzilla goes around the world fighting other monsters. As I said earlier, the story is mostly simple like many of the classic Godzilla films. A major problem with some of the previous Godzilla comics like Kingdom of Monsters was that they made some over complicated stories with some pop satire thrown in. This sometimes made people forget that they were reading a Godzilla story. Rulers of the Earth doesn't try to hard at making a super well written story and it mostly focuses on Godzilla and the other monsters, which I'm fine with. The main selling point for me was the fact that this story was bringing back some classic Toho monsters like Manda, Gezora, Varan, Jet Jaguar and both of the Gargantuas. It was a real treat for a kaiju fan like me to see these forgotten icons make a come back in a respectable matter. Also joining them was none other than Zilla, perhaps better known as the 1998 Godzilla. I never thought I would ever see him again in any Godzilla related materiel besides Final Wars. Like the rest of the Toho monsters, Zilla's comeback is treated with respect. In fact, a major highlight of this series was issue #2 in which both Godzilla and Zilla have an actual fight. Instead of getting killed in a few seconds like in Final Wars, Zilla actually puts up a good fight with Godzilla and even manages to scratch him.The major story I really recommend in Rulers of the Earth besides issue #2 is issue #4. Without spoiling the story, I'll just give you the basic jest of this the 4th issue.Issue #4 features a badly wounded Godzilla doing battle with one of his worst enemies, Destoryah. Destoryah clearly holds an advantage over Godzilla thanks to Destoryah's size and Godzilla's wound. Things look bad for the King of the Monsters until Mothra arrives to help even the odds and she also brings a little bit of back up. It's always to nice treat to see Godzilla and Mothra work together against the far more dangerous and evil Destoryah. Destoroyah is a great villain that the reader keeps interested. The artwork by Matt Frank really shines here. Godzilla always looks great when drawn by Frank and Destoryah looks just at menacing as he did in the film Godzilla vs. Destoryah.Overall though, this is a great comic for any Godzilla fan. It's better than some of the IDW Godzilla comics and the wonderful art work really helps out with keeping the reader interested. I do feel that the human characters should have been more fleshed out. But the primary focus is the monsters and I'm fine with that. If you go in this book and expect Alan Moore out of it, you'll be disappointed. But if you read this and expect classic Godzilla going against classic opponents, then your in for a ride. It's just pure popcorn entertainment with fun monster battles.

    Huge fans now!

We got this for our 7yo son for Christmas and are HUGE fans now! The artwork is inspiring him to draw, he loves the stories (we edit out the few 'bad words') and he says the characters in the book are true to how they should be (he's recently become obsessed with all things Godzilla). I'm online today to order more of the series :)

Great addition to my digital collection.

*by S***F on Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2018*

I love Godzilla, so when IDW first announced they were going to make new Godzilla comics I was really excited for them and they instantly went on my pull list and stayed there for a long time. And though I have most of the issues of the various Godzilla titles IDW put out, I know I missed a few and I also still regret not getting many of the trade bind ups, especially since now they're hard to find and really expensive. So when the digital versions came on sale I decided to pick up a bunch of them, just to have them, but also just to have a slightly more convenient way to read them again without digging in my comic collection, and even then potentially not being able to read them all without missing a couple issues. These comics are nice to read in digital, some comics don't read very well in the digital format, but with this the kindle versions are just fine for reading again. This series of Godzilla was always pretty cool, it was better than a lot of the previous “Main” Godzilla titles and had so many monsters and action in it that made it just that much better. This is pretty well written, the story seems to pick up after one of the other “Main” titles because one of the characters from one of those is in it, everybody keeps mentioning that he piloted one of the Mecha Gs, and I remember that happening, but it's been a while since I first read these comics so I forget when exactly. The art is pretty awesome, the humans aren't as good looking as the monsters, but considering my love for these comics was always mainly about if the monsters looked awesome enough or not, that never really mattered to me as much. And this series had better art than a decent amount of the other titles so it was always one of my favorites for that reason.Overall this was a solid first volume and I'm looking forward to reading the next one. This is a great comic for Godzilla fans and I do recommend it if you can get it for a good deal either in digital or the physical comics.
