The plastic hardshell has more surface area to support the greater-coverage soft layer, and the cutouts are more precise. The dust cover more securely folds into tucked position. I am impressed with the quality and design detail of this case. Although the brand is lesser-known and less expensive, the superior quality means it is NOT a knock-off. If Otterbox made a defender version of this case, then maybe it would be preferable. Notwithstanding, this is the #1 most protective low-profile case for the Motorola Z3 currently in production.
