I immediately put them to work on some metal. I noticed that they are is a nice plastic case that will probably last on my bench for a month or two. Then I will fit them in a cigar box.The handles are hardwood with nice but average finish. If a person wanted them a little smoother just rub them down with some steel wool and then some wax paper.The heads have a thin chrome/nickle coating probably for show. This coating will wear of soon but the hammers appear to be well made for the price paid. I take care of my tools so they will probably last a long time.After checking the heads were all very tight on the handles I started trying them out on some jewelry. After all that is what they are advertised for. I am sure these will work for some light tool and die making and some mini mill work but I got them for my Jewelry bench. Remember these little hammers weigh just about an ounce each. So they are light work.First I tried some copper. Worked just fine. Was able to shape the copper on my new Olympia 9lb anvil that I also got from Amazon at the same time. Then I tried some sterling silver. The silver was smoothed and shaped easily. The cross peen side of the long hammer worked well for working light rivets in gold and platinum too.Wire reducing and straightening was easy up to about 24 gauge. Spring forming, plate rolling and shaping were all easy.All and all I would say these hammers are a great buy and good tools. Just remember that these are for light work like tapping and not for pounding of stuff. Awful. I wish there was a "negative stars - one of the worst items I have ever purchased" choice. I may be tempted to choose that one...although that is giving these more credit than they deserve.I work on projects with materials that range from very delicate to extremely tough, therefore I need a wide range of tools. I got these to work on jewelry...since they are called "jeweler's hammers". Yeah. Um. NOT! These may work if you usually hammer with cotton swabs. At least they'll look a LITTLE better (more professional) on your bench.Where to start...I posted some photos up by the main product photo at the top of the page. You may want to look at those for more information. I wish the hammers in their photos would have been the hammers I received.The hammers are not useful for most projects. They are way too flimsy to withstand traditional metalworking techniques. How do they rate as tools for delicate work on the bench? I still can't recommend them. The heads are off center, so you lose most of your power and force when you strike. It is absolutely impossible to strike within the center of the face - but the balance problem also causes an uneven strike - which will bend or break whatever you are striking. (Since the heads aren't balanced you will continually hit nails crooked, for example. This is a big issue with the riveting hammer, just to choose one hammer to focus on. If the head is off balance you will not be able to "splay" the back of a rivet correctly - so the connection won't be even, it will look bad cosmetically, and you will most likely have to try riveting the same part multiple times - resulting in lost time and money...and potentially damaging your project.)The handles are wood. They are thin - especially the part just down from the neck. This makes the hammers awkward to wield. Definitely too small for an adult to handle comfortably. The sanding is shoddy and there is no acrylic coating. I got two splinters in the few minutes I played with these. The heads are steel - but they are clearly mass produced without much quality inspection, if any. For those concerned with where items are manufactured - these are made in India.Yes, these hammers are available at an amazing price. I was hoping I had stumbled across a great deal and that these would be a nice addition to my bench. I didn't expect the world for the price - however, I expected to receive hammers that would do their job, live up to their names. I was wrong. There are significant flaws with these hammers - whether the issues are due to design flaws or just poor manufacturing - and there is no way I can recommend them. These kind of remind me of hammers that would go well with one of those children's cobbler benches. Seriously.Bottom line: No deal to be had here. I don't complain about many items - BUT - these are COMPLETE JUNK and will be returned ASAP. A total waste of time, money, and items I tried to use these hammers on.
