Review: Excellet Standard Zoom Lens, and White Box is the Way to Go. - This will be a two-part review. First, I'd like to address what seems to be a misunderstanding amongst a number of people about what you are actually getting by buying a "white box" lens. What you are getting, if it is "fulfilled by desertcart", is a brand-new, USA model lens. It is identical to the lens you'd receive buying the version that is about $400 more. Retailers get a substantial discount from Canon if they buy the lens as part of a kit with a camera. In the case of the 24-105mm L, it comes with the 6d and 5d Mark III. The retailers often break up the kit, selling the camera and lens separately. They can then discount the lens and still make a profit. Canon does not have any problem with this, and it's done by authorized and non-authorized dealers. Of course, Canon only sent them one box, and that was used for the camera, so the retailer puts the lens in a white box to sell. Most of the time they put the warranty card and any paperwork pertaining only to the lens in the box, but sometimes they don't. It doesn't matter. The warranty card is not necessary to obtain warranty service, and the other paperwork is easily found online. So, the big question is, does this lens come with a Canon USA warranty? If you call Canon customer service and ask them directly (which I did), they'll tell you that it's only covered if you buy from a Canon-authorized retailer. The retailers listed currently on desertcart's site for this lens are not authorized retailers, so technically there is no Canon warranty on the lens. However, from forums on the internet and other sources, I've been told that Canon will honor the warranty if you have a receipt showing you purchased the lens new (which you would have in this case), and that they don't check to see if the retailer was authorized or not. They only check to see if the serial number (engraved on the base of the lens, near the gold connectors) indicates that it is a product designated for sale in the US, and not a "gray market" lens which was illegally imported from overseas. Hopefully I won't have to find out, but I'm fairly certain that, if my lens malfunctions during the warranty period, Canon will fix it for free. The fact that I registered it with Canon as part of my CPS (Canon Professional Services) membership gives me some reassurance on this. Now, for the lens itself. I have been using a Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens as my walk around lens for my 5d Mark II for 4 years now. I've' been very happy with it's performance, but recently I started shooting more weddings, and the Tammie has struggled to focus in the dim light in some churches (where flash isn't allowed). I reluctantly decided to replace it with a Canon 24-105mm to gain better auto-focus and Image Stabilization. Since I had both lenses, I decided to test them against each other. Optically, there's little difference between these two. Both are sharp, with nice contrast and good control over chromatic aberrations. Both have some distortion on the wide end, the Canon a bit more since it's wider, but it's nothing serious. The Tamron is one stop faster (f/2.8 vs. f/4), but the IS and fast, accurate auto-focus of the Canon more than make up for this. In the end, it comes down to what you value most. If I hadn't started shooting more church weddings, I'd still be using the Tamron, as I had always been very happy with its image quality. But the Canon matches it in most respects, and adds IS and ring-type auto-focus, which will come in handy in low light. The fact that I could buy it for about $700 in a "white box" was the kicker. Oh, and make sure you buy from a retailer that uses desertcart to fulfill the order. desertcart considers "fulfilled by desertcart" to be nearly the same as "sold by desertcart", and will allow you to send back a defective product for replacement or refund within 30 days. You'll be dealing with desertcart, not the 3rd party retailer, so buy with confidence.
Review: Great lens for taking pictures of kittens! - My new favorite lens. I recently got 2 new kittens and purchased this to take pictures of them. It creates the softest background when close up to subject, and stunning photos. It’s not very noisy, I’m able to snap pictures when the boys are sleeping and they don’t notice. It’s not a heavy lens. About 1.5lbs I think. I purchased this used and it’s worked perfectly. It has both auto and manual focus. Auto is great for when my boys are playing. Haven’t taken it off my camera body since I got it.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is this the same lens as the one advertised here at amazon for 1,100? if so why the price difference? is this an original canon "L" lens ?**
A: I ordered this lens from Electronics Basket, fulfilled by Amazon. It is a genuine Canon lens, brand new, made in Japan for the US market. It was part of a kit normally sold with either the Canon 6d or the 5d MkIII. Many retailers break up the kits and sell the items separately. Canon is aware of this and it is done by Canon-authorized dealers as well as non-authorized dealers. The lens has a USA warranty card. I registered this lens as part of my CPS (Canon Professional Services) membership and it was accepted without question. As long as the lens is "fulfilled by Amazon", they handle all returns, so if there's a problem, just send it back to Amazon within 30 days for a refund or replacement. As for the warranty, I believe Canon will honor it, as you'll have an Amazon.com receipt (although Electronics Basket will be listed as the seller). If they don't...well... you still saved $400 off the retail price.

**Q: what does it mean to be Whit Box?**
A: White box typically means that the camera is taken out of a camera package and sold separately. In this case, the 24-105 was typically sold as the kit lens with the 5D MKII. The camera is sold and the lens remains.

**Q: How is this lens shooting basketball in somewhat dim high school gymnasiums? I want but can't afford a f/2.8 w expensive glass.**
A: I understand your situation, but for shooting indoor sports the wider aperture is the way to go. Save up for the 200mm telephoto. It's a great lens and considerably less expensive than something like a 70-200 IS ii.

**Q: Is this a Gray Market Lens? Does it come with a USA Warranty?**
A: Not gray market , you can register to canon website this lens. Got my "new"never been use . I am happy and save a lot of money.
