I should have heeded the warning light on my DROBO after placing the drive into its bay. But it showed 8TB and just an orange warning light. I thought it might have been the bay. I decided, finally, to replace it with a new 8TB drive (not a renewed one) and no warning light. Pulled out what was an 8TB drive to reformat it for an enclosure and the erase and reformat got me a measly 1.4TB Drive. So much for an 8TB drive.
