The wifi feature and phone app allow for the program of the unit without any physical contact. The unit will also monitor the weather by using your zip code to modify the watering schedule. It is very easy to adjust watering time by the day and zone, as well as run a manual watering. Before ordering, insure you have at least two bars in a wifi signal, where you plan to mount the device. This is to make sure the device has good contact with your router. The installation instructions are very clear and easy to follow. Review: TOUCHY WIFI SETTINGS, but a good system. Great SUPPORT. - GOOD: Rain Bird did a good job overall. The mechanical install of the unit was easy and I was replacing an older Hunter system that was terrible. BAD: This company uses a red/green indicator light, which is the worst thing they could do for about 10% of us colorblind people. But my wife helped out in that department. UGLY: The WiFi setup was terrible for me and may be for others. If not for spectacular personal technical support by Mehgan at RainBird, this could easily have been a one-star rating. She took the time to troubleshoot the bugs. It turned out the Android App needed to have permissions manually approved and set for both Storage and Location … your phone settings for the App itself. Also make sure your cache and data are cleared out if you had previous failed attempts to connect like I did. At first the device, only 20 ft from my wireless 2.4GHz router was saying weak signal … but then after clearing data and cache it suddenly was a strong signal. Then it connected just fine AFTER saying it didn't have internet, then it really did have internet. I think the software is immature and Rain Bird is having to work through it BOTTOM LINE: It is a good product, but the WiFi settings may be hit or miss for you. Fortunately Rain Bird is backing their product with excellent tech support. (i.e. st8i-wifi vs. st8i-2.0)** A: I don’t know the difference between the two **Q: Is it easy to install to install and replace my old sprinkler controller? Can I do it on my own?** A: Yes. It's extremely easy. First, Take the cover off your old CP. Take a picture of the wiring on the old CP. Label wires if you want to put them back in the correct spots on the Rain Bird. Mount the Rain Bird CP, insert and secure the wires back in their correct spots. Then, plug it in a power outlet. Download the app to connect it to your Wi-Fi. One thing I learned about the app is that you have to give the app certain permissions on your phone to connect it to your Wi-Fi. Otherwise, you will never connect to your Wi-Fi if you don't give it permissions. People complain about connection issues, but I don't have that issue. My Rain Bird box is in mounted on the outer wall of my garage. It's probably about 60 ft. from my router and the signal has to travel through an interior wall. My connection is better than solid. Check the Rain Bird Wi-Fi connection strength against your phones Wi-Fi connection strength. My phone Wi-Fi connection strength had full bars to my router at CP mounted location. I don't use the programming part of the CP or App. I control it manually from just about ANYWHERE in the world. I water my grass as much as I want too and as long as I want too. good day.... **Q: I can not reach the timer anymore and the wifi light is solid red. cant reach rainbird either and this error is not in the manual. anyone ?** A: 1) If your mobile device password (in the Rainbird app) does not match the Rainbird cloud server password it won't connect. Try resetting the PW. 2) Remove front cover of the Rainbird Controller then depress the wifi reset button (lower left module). That will reboot the wifi and it should start blinking green again. 3) If that doesn't restore operation I would reboot your system wifi router in the house (unplug for 10 secs). 4) If that doesn't work look at what channel your house wifi is operating on. Too much congestion on a channel can interfere with the RainBird wifi's ability to communicate with your house wifi. There are 11 channels on 2.4GHZ. I experience some connection difficulties if I am out in the back yard a distance away from the controller box. Sometimes just closing all apps on my phone helps. It gets finicky but its nice to turn on a zone without having to manually open a valve. **Q: This product probably won't work if it's installed in my detached garage, which wouldn't get the wifi signal from my house. Correct?** A: It will still look manually, not remotely. Even if you have wifi, you may experience what I did, which was extreme difficulty connecting it to my devices. It ended up eventually it connected to my iphone, and nothing else. I own an orbit, for another area, and very happy with it, as it connected to all my devices, my two ipads, and my iphone. I got this as it was small and needed a small controller for my space. I can honestly rate it five stars. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent irrigation timer/controller, Advice to add to Apple devices *by J***Y on August 5, 2025* This is an excellent WIFI enabled irrigation timer controller. It was very easy to install and use. Think through the ordering of your zones. Our current zone map was strange bouncing from front to backyard areas. You can take pictures of each area of your yard and link it to the specific irrigation zone. For instance left front yard picture with zone 1, Center island front yard - zone 2. Downloading the Rainbird app was easy. Setting up watering schedule was easy. The only problem we encountered was accepting invitation to have access to the RB controller on Apple devices. It turns out that you need to use the Mail App on Apple devices (blue icon with white envelope) to open up the attached RBCF file. At that point, it is easy to add access to the RB controller. Remember to close the RB app on other devices before adding a new one. The only disappointing limitation is that you will have to add all the yard pictures of the zones on each new device. I am especially excited as this timer checks the local weather forecast and stops irrigation if it is likely to rain in your zip code (you can set sensitivity to 50%, 75% or 100% change of rain).
