Review: very great manga series start come out year of my birth - a very different look at the series compared to what ive seen in the games and soul of gold anime on chrunchyroll
Review: A saintly comic - highly recommended! - One warning... be prepared to read this book from right-to-left. Once upon a time, to accommodate a Western audience, the artwork in Japanese manga was flipped around so it could be read left-to-right. Recently demands were made to leave the art alone and translate the comic untouched. This first English edition of 'Saint Seiya' being one example. So, to enjoy this novel, you must read it right-to-left: every page, every panel... every speech bubble! The story loosely focuses on Greek mythology, especially on the legend of the war goddess Athena. She did not fight on the basis of conquest, but rather on defense. To protect her were her Saints: hundreds of young men donning Knight's Cloth, and playing a role in the outcomes of the world's most famous battles... Cutting to the present-day, two Japanese tourists wandering around in the ruins of Greece encounter a large 'meteorite' that crashes down before their eyes. Although this is no meteorite, but a young teenager called Seiya, who came to Greece years ago. Under the tutelage of the vicious Marin, the time has come for him to claim the Pegasus Cloth and take it back to Japan - but only if he survives a match against the brutal Cassios... and thus begins the story of one of the greatest comics ever published. The translation works very well; not altering the original Japanese storyline in any way, except for a few name changes (eg. Saori, now called Sienna). Perhaps the books biggest problem is with the sound effects. While Viz/Shonen Jump's mechanical retouch serves its function, the text seems too large and jarring, almost ruining Kurumada's gorgeous artwork. Putting that small niggle aside, there are some good reasons why you should get Saint Seiya. Essentially, its Sailor Moon with boys (but a whole lot less of the franchise cash-in), and has more enjoyable (and shorter) battles than Dragonball. This is also the first time that Saint Seiya has officially appeared in English; since in its eighteen-year history, it has enjoyed massive success in France, and all over Asia. So sit back, enjoy, and be proud that you own a much-needed English edition of this legendary comic (no pun intended!).
