    No Gems This Time

When I learned of Vol. 3, I was excited about more shows from the band's peak years (putting aside the whole Frampton vs. Clempson debate), yet concerned that they would pale compared to the stellar Winterland KBFH release. My fears were justified. All four shows are audience recordings. Sadly, none of the tapers were right in front of the stage. Thus, we don't have great sound quality anywhere. The relative strengths and weaknesses follow:New York - the worst of the bunch. The taper is pretty far from the stage; the soundfield is narrow; the treble at times is too shrill and/or distorted; and instrument separation isn't very good. It is listenable and Clempson has a neat Hendrix-like wah solo but I can't say I'd relisten to the show. Overall, a C+.Tulsa - better. Although the soundfield remains narrow, the taper is a bit closer and the treble is ok. There is a moderate amount of tape hiss and the audience clapping can, in spots, be quite loud, drowning out the band. There's also some nearby people talking now and then, though not too annoyingly. Performance-wise, this show was the weakest. By no means was the band bad; rather they were just less dynamic than in the other three. Overall, a B-Boston - better yet. Though Up Our Sleeves leads things off with Clempson's leads being almost inaudible, the instrument balance improves after that, and, although somewhat variable, is generally ok thereafter. The taper is fairly close to the stage and there,'s no audible hiss. The clarity is quite good., esp. with vocals. But, at times, the clapping is loud and this audience does a lot of clapping! An excellent show performance-wise by the band. It's a B+ when the balance is good and a B- when it isn't (I assume the taper changed positions occasionally, wandering to the side away from Clempson). Too bad he didn't center and move closer - this could have been a really strong recording.Philly - The recording isn't as clear as Boston - the taper seems further from stage, so the sound has a general muddiness to it. But, the balance is better and there's less clapping,/ambient noise. Tape hiss is minor, not distracting. Another really strong show. I'd give it a B.So, although there's nothing to compare with Charlton from Vol. 1 or Philly from Vol. II, some people might enjoy this, despite the similar set, yet significant sonic downgrade, to/from the KBFH release.

I expected very little...and was still greatly disappointed

What a miserable sounding box set. I own the first Official Bootleg and knew that these are surreptitious coatpocket Walkmen recordings, but was not prepared for the completely hollow, inaudible and incomplete recording quality. Some songs are literally cut off before they are done. Beware. This really sucks.
