I read in some other reviews that this is possible.** A: I didn't know you could remove the lid until you asked and I looked closer. Look on the underside of the lid and see the two plastic slider "legs" that keep the lid on. Pinch them towards the middle of the lid and that allows the slider to release. If you overfill the cup and coffee gets in the lid sliding mechanism, it is difficult to clean under that sliding part. Maybe the dishwasher will clean it. If not, you have to pop that sliding mechanism off the lid. Put lid on a flat surface, the side with the sliding mechanism down on the table. Sliding mechanism is closed so that liquid could not spill. Use, for example, the handle from a spoon to push on the sliding mechanism through the hole in the lid. It takes quite a bit of force.
