The spring tension is created by the flexing of the thin plastic that connects the bumpers to the center of the piece. Over time, this will fail due to fatigue of the plastic. I suppose Microsoft sells more controllers that way since most people probably won't bother fixing them. I recently purchased the version 2 Elite controller due to its additional features and customization.
