This would be revolutions per minute. That is pretty easy to decipher. 3000 rpm is faster than 300, for example. You’ll need to determine whether the reading reflects a speed that is suitable for your needs. **Q: Will this test rpms on a stihl chainsaw?** A: Yes. Remove drive cover and chain. Cut a small piece of the (included) reflective tape and stick it on the drive gear. Fire up the chain saw and aim the tach at the spinning drive gear. Every time the reflective tape makes one revolution it gets counted by the tach. If you are concerned about the speed of the chain (in feet per minute) you’ll need to count the teeth on the drive gear, measure the length of chain that would fit around it, and do some calculating. **Q: Can this measure the rpm of wind turbine blades?** A: Yes, but please kindly note the angel of your measurement. I have the tape on the pulley and does not read the rpms** A: How much tape did you use? If you used the entire piece they provide, then you used too much. It only takes a very small piece ( 1/4” or 5mm to 6mm) will do. The idea is that the highly reflective spot from the tape reflects just once on each revolution of the motor, and the tachometer counts the number of times that happens in some interval of time, or measures the time between each revolution and then calculates the RPM shown. If the motor shaft is nearly as shiny as the tape, then you’ll have problems, too. In this case, darken the shaft with paint or a permanent marking pen so you have some contrast between that and the reflective tape. In some cases you can do without the tape. If the motor shaft is very dark, a drop of bright white paint, or even typewriter correction fluid ( white out) will provide enough contrast.
