I suppose any type of menthol essential oil would also work just as well, as ants HATE the smell. Hummers/ birds in general can't smell, but I'm sure it would do a job on their eyes watering - but applied at the bottom of the pole solves that issue... the vaseline part of it also has then avoiding it at all costs as well too (they get stuck, if they dare). Found this easy fix trying to mow lawn when monsoon/ mosquito season hits & they avoid you like the plague as well. Weird, but easy enough & suppose it makes sense too. Just be careful to keep it as far away from feeders as much as possible.... **Q: The hummers love his feeder, but now I do have ants all over it.
