I'm quite sure the black film and spots is from the manufacturing process. Mine were not cleaned before I received them. It took quite a bit of elbow grease, which was frustrating, but all the black came off with baking soda and vinegar. I then had to run them through a couple of dishwasher cycles. I would have just sent them back, but I loved all the different sizes and the depths of the bowls. I had also bought and returned other sets of bowls because they weren't deep enough. The sizes of the bowls are very versatile and easy to clean once the initial "first cleaning" is done.
