Basically it's about 4" deep for the soil. (In other words, shallow) The soil sits on a grid. It comes without instructions, so you have to sort of wing it to set it up. I found a video on youtube which glosses over the set up. If you're familiar with earthboxes, it is similar - soil wicks dropping into the water reservoir. The "1 gallon reservoir" sounds like a lot, but really is like a large saucer under a large pot. It can dry up fast, especially in hot weather. The only way to refill is to water the plant until it appears overwatered. At least that's all I can figure out. It looks good, and if you don't mind watering, go for it!
