It is used to reduce/eliminate ammonia odors in barns and stalls. I'm sure you could use it to extinguish cigarettes in, but whether doing this would actually help to reduce or eliminate the tobacco odor is questionable. I believe there are products that are specifically made for eliminating odors from cigarette smoke, though. Good luck. **Q: can this be used heavey dogs odor in basement?** A: This has a Sandy texture. Don't know if I would use it indoors due to tracking by your dog's paws. But it works great for odors and moisture in my chicken coop and it is nontoxic. **Q: Has anyone used this in outhouses in the wilderness? we had success with a product called barn fresh, but we can't find it. is this the same thing?** A: I have not used it that way, so can't say for certain if it will do the job you need it to do. I can tell you that it is essentially odorless, so if you are looking for a freshener product, this doesn't have any "perfume" to it. They are rather minute in size, but not to the point of being "dust" or "powdery". I do see where zeolite is available as a sediment filter removal media, but possibly for that purpose the granules are larger than these. In the backyard where the dogs poop and pee is just dirt (nothing will grow there due to their use of it) and has always attracted flies and been smelly, especially in the Summer. Well, with this product I just sprinkle it over their favorite spots to go and the odor is gone and there are many less flies attracted to it. It makes the backyard so much more pleasant. It lasts a very long time before having to be 'resprinkled' so this 41lb bag will probably last me a few years! This brand is also a great price and it's the same product as that stuff in the smaller containers. Love it!
