But that price proved hard for me to resist. I have a few things around the house that I wanted to use a non-contact thermometer for. For example, I have a betta fish and have to do fairly frequent water changes. I had heard that these infrared thermometers work fine on fluid. Obviously, I don't want to use my digital cooking thermometer on fish water. Or if I do, I have to remember to sanitize it before using it on food again. Occasionally when I cook I wouldn't mind having something like this to use to see what temps I'm getting on the pan and so forth. And it's just a handy thing to have around if you can get one that's reasonably accurate for a good price. I played with it for several hours when I first got it and I have found it to be reasonably accurate and surprisingly decent quality for the price. I don't really think most of it's shortcomings are related to it's low price. For example, it doesn't do well with shiny metal because infrared thermometers typically don't do well with shiny metal. It's a shortcoming of the design. There are probably infrared thermometers that can do it better than this one can but I doubt you can buy any of them for under 30 dollars. So....it's reasonably accurate for most things. It's usually more accurate the closer you are. The real advantage to these thermometers is no contact is necessary. You really probably shouldn't expect great things if you're farther away from something than a couple of feet. You can get a ballpark reading from across the room but it will get more accurate as you get closer to the spot you're trying to measure. The laser pointer is a general guide but the cone gets larger the farther away you are. So if you point it at a window from 10 feet away, you'll probably get something like an average temp in the general area of the window. Which is kind of useful, in some situations. If you want a precise temperature of the window sill, you need to be much closer. Anyway, I'm more than happy with it for the price. I bought this for general household use so I was not going to spend much more than I did for a similar product. You can certainly spend a lot more on a product such as this and probably get better accuracy if you need it for work or you need it to be absolutely accurate. I have two small cons....1. The emissivity setting is tedious to change. You have to press the button for each change. You can't just hold it down. It won't move unless you release the button and push it each time you want to make a change. Annoying.2. The connector for the battery feels a bit flimsy. It's the old 9 volt battery on a wire thing. If anything is gonna go wrong with this thing it will probably be that. Overall, the product does not feel cheap. It doesn't have a bad smell like you sometimes get with cheap electronics. The plastic is thick and doesn't feel like it'd break easily or be brittle. The screen is nicer than I'd have honestly expected for this price. Nice and easy to read. It kind of has a narrow field of readability so if it's turned too far, it gets washed out but that's not a big deal to me. From relatively straight on, it's very good. For this review. I confirmed my readings with a Taylor digital kitchen thermometer and other digital thermometers I have around the house that measure ambient temps. I would not expect absolutely perfect accuracy from anything that wasn't designed for use in professional science. You would definitely pay more. Maybe not a lot more (this is the only one I've tried) but more than 12 bucks. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Scifi utility must have *by H***N on Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2018* This thing rules. As an 80s baby I immediately found use for this thing besides my initial intent... fridge? Check. Oven/food? Check. Dog? Check. Guinea pig? Yep. Rats? Why not. Girlfriend? Pew pew yep still hot. For 10 bux you get the coolest laser pointer you could want, a light up blue screen, you can pretend you are in aliens and make lil blip noises as you check the temp across the room, or your dogs butt, bc why not?
