The caps/covers are meant to keep the sockets clean of dirt and debris. The whole thing is supposed to be waterproof without the socket caps/covers on, but it's not. Check out my review. **Q: You have in the notes that there is 6ft between each socket but on an image you include to describe the product it says 7ft. Do you know which it is?** A: My review stated: "My only regret is that I didn't buy the 50 foot length. I'm going to order another 25 foot length". I didn't mention feet apart. I measured mine and they are 6 feet apart. I do not know the distance apart on the 50 foot cords. **Q: Can I leave outdoor lights plugged in to a middle outlet all year round?** A: I would worry about rain water getting into the middle outlet. so it needs to be in a dry area or at least installed with the outlet pointing down to keep water from going in. Extension cords are usually used just for 90 days or less like they ask for Christmas decorations....I have had extension cords out for several years and eventually the contacts corrode and the cord needs replaced.
