    Death Becomes Her

*by F***E on Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2017*

If you've spent most of the series hating Charlotte Rae Raines, and/or Granny for that matter, be ready to have your world turned upside down. It's not that Charlotte changes all that much in death, but as with earlier "Betweener clients," in death she has time to see things about life that she missed while living it, and Emma Lee gets private time to get a new perspective and share a new perspective with the deceased. It really all comes down to perspective in these stories. The author does an excellent job making us realize how much we take for granted and ignore when we are caught up in the daily grind of living life. We truly don't know what we've got until it's gone.Betweener clients caught between life and the after life get a sliver of time in which to make that realization and make it count for something before they fully pass on. Emma Lee, in spending time with them during this time, grows and develops not only her powers and detective skills, but also grows in appreciating her life and the people in it.As a reader I join Emma on her journey and as a result appreciate her Granny a lot more, growing beyond my limited perspective of her. In reviews of earlier stories I said I hated her as much as I hated Voldemort and all the Sith Lords of every Star Wars episode. I can't say the narcissistic crazy old bat has actually grown on me, but I appreciate that she's important to Emma Lee and to her hometown. As another reviewer pointed out, there is some bad science toward the latter part of this story, but just go with it. If you get caught up on that, you will miss the more important points this story makes about life and family that I just talked about.Just focus on the amazingly difficult and heart wrenching experience Emma undergoes solving the mystery of her own sister's death, while finding out almost too late how much it's possible to love Charlotte now that she finally has the chance to truly know her and Charlotte discovers the same.

“A Ghostly Mortality” earns 5/5 glasses of Granny’s sweet tea & a slice of her apple pie!

Emma Lee is on edge. Business is hectic, and her sister Charlotte has been less than cooperative to sign the agreement to sell her stake in Eternal Slumber Funeral Home that they ran together. Charlotte Rae has always been a ‘thorn’ in Emma Lee’s side, opposites as sisters, teasing her about the “Funeral Trauma” and predicaments she has often found herself, but when she went off to work in Lexington, Emma knew it was time to part ways. But, when Charlotte pops in at the funeral home, Emma is not happy. It’s worse when she discovers no one else can see her there. Charlotte has been murdered. “So you really can see dead people?”Distraught, but determined, Emma Lee begins her investigation against her boyfriend sheriff’s wishes to leave it to the police. Emma, often with Charlotte and a ghost cat in tow, heads off to follow up on every possibility. Charlotte doesn’t remember much, Betweener ‘clients’ frequently have memory lapses, but the flashes of memory, business files, questionable behaviors, and arguments all need to be pursued. But Emma Lee does uncover several suspects including the Hardgrove siblings, a Bridezilla’s mom, competitive businesses, and did someone say a wife with a prenup?Once again, I was totally entertained by Emma Lee and her “Betweener” gift in the sixth book of the Ghostly Southern Mystery series. Emma is clever, strong-willed, yet still working on her confidence. She loves her family and wants to help people during their most difficult time, even though now it’s her and Granny. The bit of romance is a nice respite from the investigation, and we continue to be delightfully engaged in all the small town squabbles and gossip. We were treated to engrossing suspense and an “Oh, my!” conclusion. The conflict between the sisters is one with which many of us can identify, and her unique opportunity to set things right and to share moments of real understanding between siblings is endearing and satisfying…I literally cried."Disclosure: A review copy of this book was sent to me by the author/publisher. All of the above opinions are my own."

    Not one of Tonya's best

Emma Lee's life as Betweener just took a turn the she had never thought, or dreamed would happen. While she and her sister are in the middle of one of the biggest arguments ever after Charlotte move to another town to work for a competitor. Emma realizes that her most recent argument her and Charlotte are having is with Charlotte's ghost. Which could only mean one thing. Charlotte Rea has been murdered and needs Emma's help to cross over.Pros: This is a well written story with multiple twist, strong characters, and a very solid plot.Cons: There were multiple things in the story that had no closure, or would not have happened. Among them, when to police notify the family of the loss of a loved one, they do not have the lights flashing as there is no emergency to what had happened to belongings removed from a body in the casket at a viewing. I was also disappointed with the final reveal of the killer(s)
