An incredible compilation of a 5 year period

So what is this thing? A German company has put together a 500 CD compilation that they they are calling the Encyclopedia of Jazz. This is part 5, "Modern Jazz", and it covers the period of 1953-7 quite thoroughly over the course of 100 CDs. Major artists get about 5 CDs each but some lesser known artists also get a CD. Some of the CDs are the length of an LP, some one and a half, and some are two LPs. All of the obvious bases are covered and a few not-so-obvious ones. I am making new discoveries on a daily basis as I forge my way through the box.I am pleased with the overall quality of the product. To me the sound quality is quite natural (though I have not done an A/B comparison with other releases). Each CD is stored in a cardboard slipcase and the box presents the CDs in 3 rows. A book of liner notes presents tracks, credits, recording dates, and the titles of the original releases, but there is very little in terms of detail or historical information. You will have to buy a book or frequent allmusic.com to put all of the music into context. My biggest frustration with the set is that the tracks are apparently presented in the order they were recorded, not the order they were released on the original LPs. For example, Saxophone Colossus by Sonny Rollins is presented in its entirety, but hearing it out of order just feels weird. My last comment is on price. At the time of posting this review, the list price is in the hundreds of dollars. I don't think it is a good value at that price. However, if you can find the box for well under $100 as I did, I think you will be quite happy with it if you are a fan (but not a connoisseur) of the period.

    Useful, but not a must-have-at-any-price

*by A***N on Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2013*

The set contains more than 990 tracks, recorded between 1950 and 1957, with the main body of recordings after 1953.This makes for good to very good sound quality as the earliest Hifi records were recorded in this period. All tracks are in mono ... or at least all I have examined. This set appears to have been less easy to populate than the Big Bands volume: of 100 CDs, 9 CDs have playing time between 30 and 40 minutes, and 42 CDs clock in between 40 and 50 minutes. The remaining 49 are longer than 50 minutes. The CDs are grouped in four sections: Cool Jazz, West Coast Jazz, Hard-Bop and Modern Mainstream:Cool Jazz -- 13 CDs: Miles Davis (4); Dave Brubeck, MJQ (2); Lee Konitz, Lee Konitz / Gerry Mulligan / Shorty Rogers, Tony Scott & Bill Evans, J. J. Johnson, Lennie Tristano (1).West Coast -- 24 CDs: Stan Getz, Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan (4); Jimmy Giuffre, Herb Geller, Barney Kessel (2); Clifford Brown / Tadd Dameron, Serge Chaloff, Shelly Manne, Art Pepper, Shorty Rogers, Howard Rumsey (1).Hard Bop -- 46 CD: Clifford Brown, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins (5); Art Blakey (4); Cannonball Adderley, Thelonious Monk (3); Lee Morgan, Horace Silver, Jimmy Smith (2); Cannonball & Nat Adderley, Nat Adderley, Art Blakey & Thelonious Monk, Sony Clark, Paul Chambers, Miles Davis, Kenny Dorham, Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, Thad Jones, Jackie McLean, Charlie Mingus, Hank Mobley, Max Roach, Prestige All-Stars (1).Modern Mainstream -- 17 CD: Dizzy Gillespie (2); Mose Allison, Kenny Burrell, Al Cohn & Zoot Sims, Herb Ellis, Erroll Garner, Dizzy Gillespie - Sonny Rollins - Sonny Stitt, Milt Jackson, Jay and Kai, Quincy Jones, Oscar Peterson, Buddy DeFranco & Oscar Peterson, Zoot Sims, Birdland Stars, Four Brothers, All-Star (1).Note that a number of artists appear in several sections. 'Jay and Kai' in the last section are J. J. Johnson and Kai Winding, and 'Four Brothers' are Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, Herbie Steward, and Serge Chaloff (though Charlie O'Kane replaces him on some tracks -- the track information says "O'Kame").Two CD:s are a little out of the ordinary:The first is the one labelled 'Quincy Jones' -- this is the only CD dedicated to an arranger: he does not play on any of the tracks. The CD contains Swedish recordings made in 1953, with Clifford Brown - Art Farmer Swedish All-Stars (4 tracks), and also with Quincy Jones Swedish-American All-Stars (4 tracks). The second is the 'All-star' CD (Modern Mainstream) which is the only CD I have found to include vocal tracks. The vocalist is Dinah Washington in three All-Star Live Jam Session tracks from 1954.All CDs are in series cardboard sleeves with short track details. Fuller details are given in the included 'Modern Jazz' booklet (CD-sized), and also on the index CD (also included) -- though it must be said that the sleeves, the booklet and the index do not always agree completely. There are also some minor hiccups here and there (e.g. O'Kame - O'Kane as already noted).Music is still fine, though when I listen to it, I sometimes sense that it has been processed to keep clicks and other audio pollution down. A very informal attempt a A-B comparison gives me a slight edge to the originals, but then this collection is clearly not for anyone who already has the epoque covered. Neither is it targeted to the complete newcomer: the introduction in the booklet is very terse, and about half of it seems to be boilerplate, reused for all the boxes. The specific information is very terse -- and as much of it is about bop, it's not quite clear where the lines between this box ('Modern Jazz') and the box 'Bebop Story' have been drawn. Newcomers to this jazz epoque will need additional informational material.Even so, it seems a pretty good place to start on cool and west-coast jazz.
