Queen Elizabeth I is one of my favorite people to read about. No matter how many books I've read about her, I'm still able to learn something new each time. Yes I bought this from a thrift book site, but what they consider very good condition is light-years away from what I consider very good. The pages are yellowed...there was writing on one of the pages...it has that cellophane that library books have...all huge turnoffs. Thankfully I got a refund for the purchase, which Amazon made easy. I'll be more careful in which seller I choose from now on.

Well written book and pulls from many different sources. It also provides some perspective on her personality and the rational of her thoughts and actions. The only negative I found was that it spent a lot of time in regards to the marriage issue. Sometimes I lost track as the possible alliances and political pro's and con's were similar for almost every time a marriage proposal was put fourth- either by her or by one of her ministers.  I think she was a very unique, intelligent and well read women. Especially of her era but the book does not fully outline  and explain her domestic and foreign policy. And what she did to try and accomplish these goals. Also, a little more information about the people within her circle in and out of the Tudor court would have been helpful.  Other than that Mr. Loades touched on many topics that other authors have simply left out or barely address.  I do recommend this book.
