Our HD-2343SS 1.5KW metallurgical smelting furnace is a compact electric furnace for melting scrap, reclaiming, alloying, and refining various metals. Perfect for pouring melted metals in casting operations when making bars or buttons. Works with high-karat gold, silver, copper, brass, and bronze. The electronic feature regulates the temperature by providing full power input to the coil until a selected temp is reached. Important to note, usually when you set temperatures, especially when first heating up the furnace, the actual read-out and temperature reached is going to be 50-100 degrees more than what you set the furnace to. That is perfectly normal. But eventually the temperature will come back down and stabilize and will hold to a +/- 5F. Setting the temp is easy. It requires you to "set" twice. Plug the unit in (fan comes on) and flip the on switch. Using the "down" button take the digital display's number to the temperature you want to set to. For example, gold melts at 1,948°F. So using the "down" button you set the temperature to 1,948°F. You then hit "set". A screen full of zeros will appear. The next step is to via a combination of ">", "down", and "up" buttons set the numerical value to the same as before; in this case 1,948°F. Push "set" button. You have successfully set the temperature. Upon examination it appears I was sent a 2kg smelter with a 2.6 cm asbestos pad to stack on top in case I decided to try and smelt a full 3 kg...(but if I use this the top can't close so there is a severe heat loss / graphite oxidation issue that just seems like an odd way to deal with the issue. The company should have just SAID "we're out of 3 kg smelters, here's the 2 kg instead plus a donut if you decide to try it". ...hmmm There are no instructions included so this is truly a buyer beware. If this is your first time with a 'port-A-smelter' then pay attention to proper break-in procedure fore a new coil. Do NOT use a crucible or metal for the break-in...this is a purely electricity burning operation that will save you trouble going forward. Turn power on. Check your lights etc. on the digi-display. Set up your first burn between 1700-1800 F and set your timer (not included) to four hours. BUT FIRST!! There is a scratch resistance film on all surfaces so make sure to remove it all..yes ALL! As it ramps up you will notice it start to creak and smoke like a ready to erupt volcano in general...this is normal. Be sure you are in a well ventilated area!!!! If you are in any way respitorily compromised, have someone else attend this process for you. So that's where I'm at right now..
