While this particular circuit has been done to death, we think the Plumes offers an original take on the old, tired dead horse everyone loves to beat on. For starters, we’ve done away with the sacred 4558 IC and the classic BJT transistor buffers and replaced them with JFET operational amplifiers and raised the input impedance to nearly 10 megaohms! This offers lower noise, better signal integrity and more chime in the high end. We power this OpAmp by taking the 9v input and converting it to +/- 9v. The end result is a more 3-dimensional tone with added clarity that really pushes a nice tube amp over the edge. We’ve added 3 different clipping options for your consideration. Mode 1 is symmetrical clipping utilizing a pair of light emitting diodes. Mode 2 is clean boost mode. Mode 3 is an asymmetrical silicon diode arrangement similar to the stock screamer but with more output and clean clarity. The full range is useful. It is also great for driving other pedals or the drive channel of an amp. I like to use a compressor into the Plumes to push a plexi pedal or any other gain setting. Using a guitar with humbuckers really pushes the pedal and produces a clear and articulate distortion. The Plumes may be a bit bright for some people but I don't like a dark and muddy sound. It basically makes whatever you have sound better. I keep it on most of the time now. Highly recommend. You must get a 9v center negative power supply. **Q: Can you use the Plumes to make a fuzz pedal (or already-overdriven amp) sound tighter for metal/hard rock tones?** A: The Plumes is basically a Tubescreamer with some options added (asymmetrical clipping, boost, symmetrical clipping). The EQ leans towards being bright and slightly scooped. I don't think Plumes is really fit for purpose for metal tones. In my humble opinion. Perhaps check out the EQD Tonejob plus a metal distortion pedal... **Q: does the clean boost mode still provide pedal overdrive** A: This pedal is not a true clean boost, however you can use it as such by lowering the gain knob al the way down and turning up the level (on tone 3) and it will work as a boost with a slight overdrive much like a blues tone, thanks! **Q: is this a boss sd-1 clone or a tube screamer clone? if it is a tube screamer clone is it a ts 9 or a ts 808?** A: I think this is supposed to be a tube-screamer type pedal.
