Whilst most infected cats do not show symptoms, they are prone to developing other infections and certain types of cancer. FIV is similar to HIV (the human immunodeficiency virus) and causes a feline disease that is similar to AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). However, FIV is a highly species-specific virus that infects only felines. There is currently no evidence that FIV can infect humans. What is Feline Leukaemia Virus?Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is a disease that impairs the cat's immune system and causes certain types of cancer. This virus infection is second only to trauma as the leading cause of death in cats, killing 85% of persistently infected felines within three years of diagnosis. The virus commonly causes anaemia or lymphoma, but because it suppresses the immune system, it can also predispose cats to deadly infections. It affects all breeds, with males more likely to contract the infection than females, and it is usually seen between the ages of one to six years old.Why do I need this Test?Many people confuse FIV with FeLV. Although these diseases are in the same retrovirus family and cause many similar secondary conditions FeLV and FIV are different diseases, so it is important to determine which virus (if any) your cat has. Unfortunately, there is no specific cure for either virus. However, the prognosis and life expectancy is significantly enhanced by regular Vet check-ups and careful health management of infected cats, so early diagnosis is vital. How do I perform the Test?It is very simple - just obtain a blood sample and apply 1 drop of blood to the test cassette and then add 2-3 drops of the test solution. We had our economic Vet administer the tests. The "C" line is easy to see but the "T" line indicator of being positive for disease is very difficult to see. I ended up using an illuminated 5X magnifying glass to make sure the "T" line was indeed there. A non-vet could do this test but since blood is being drawn (only a drop or two is needed) we involved out vet. FeLV is so contagious and now we know who to vaccinate and who already has FeLV and needs to be nutritionally enhanced for longevity. Would it be enough to show to a stud owner?** A: Interesting question. We ordered these tests to find out which of our cats had feline leukemia. We vaccinated those that were not positive. Whether or not a stud owner would accept a picture of the results depends on the mentality of the stud owner. If the cat was not subsequently vaccinated (probably would positive the test), perhaps the stud owner would allow you to test again in front of that stud owner. If it were me, I would honor the picture of the test (I tend towards trust) however with the state of the global mentality, it's a roll of the dice as to how a person reacts. I have found the tests to be accurate. **Q: How do you obtain blood?** A: We gave the tests to our Vet and he drew the blood. To minimize trauma, he was asked to use a small needle (like a diabetic syringe) and the cats did fairly well with that.
