I believe the padding in the newer Kevlar helmets is, in large part responsible, for softening the concussive effects of mortars, IEDs, and other explosive devices used by insurgents in Iraq.I found the book illuminating, but, contra another reviewer, I'm not sure how accessible it is. The book seems to be pitched at the level of an expert addressing other experts, or perhaps an above-average lay reader. Considering that many people suffering from severe TBI are cognitively impaired, I think a "TBI for Dummies" book would make a wonderful compliment to this compendium.That said, the book does a good job of defining traumatic brain injury, and also highlighting good available testing measures (like the Glasgow Coma Score) for determining the extent of brain trauma a TBI victim has suffered.It's clear, after reading this book, that, as with many illnesses, much study needs to still be done in order to come up with the best way to treat traumatic brain injuries. Many methods are still in their experimental stages, and, since the types of weapons used in wars continue to change, the types of injuries (both brain-related and in general) will continue to change, requiring new treatment methods. The book also makes it clear that children suffering from TBI should be dealt with in a radically different way than adults afflicted with traumatic brain injuries.I'll close by saying that I found the book to be informative, but sometimes a tad too academic for the average reader (i.e. a family member of someone with a TBI, who might lack a post-secondary education). I don't want to come off as anti-intellectual, but, as numerous studies have pointed out (even those quoted by the authors of this book) low education attainment and poverty increase one's chances of being the victim of a TBI by several orders of magnitude, so it only makes sense that a book for the families of victims should be written in as simple a style as possible. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Five Stars *by A***R on Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2015* Terrific resource ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent, thorough, and very-well researched *by D***R on Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2014* I work in brain injury rehabilitation research.
