I love this book. It is indispensable for research for anyone looking up his Scottish genealogy.  It is the complete version not the abbreviated David Dobson version  It is worth the price.

Outstanding reference on Scottish surnames. Earliest known appearances, changes through time, history, cross references to other alternative spellings. Is it going to tell you how it got to you today? No. But the notes are extremely thorough and point you in the directions to research for more detail. In a country with so many “ethnicities” and families battling over power and turf, surname changes were common since surnames began. No other book will give you the places to start sorting them.

I would consider this the most important book for Scottish Genealogy research. In the 100 years or so since its release, not a single better tome of information even comes close. While it's not a cheap purchase, the information in side is invaluable, particularly if you have numerous family name searches.Once your tree is complete, consider donating the book to your local genealogy center so that others can reap the benefits of this solidly researched book.
