Great filter and good for the environment

This filter filters out all coffee grinds, but lets the natural oils and robust flavors of the coffee shine through. I bought this filter a few months ago, because I wanted to alternate between the paper filters and a good metal filter for my Aeropress. The S Filter did not disappoint, as it is easy to clean and maintain and works well to make a perfect cup of coffee. The first use was a little difficult, only because my Aeropress was brand new, and I hadn't worn my press in yet by using it, so the S Filter didn't fit right away. After I practiced adding maybe 4 or 5 paper filters at one time into my Aeropress, I was able to wear the Aeropress in to the point where the S Filter works great, but I can also switch back to paper filters. Now I use the S Filter with no problems, and it is really easy to just rinse it off after I use it. It's beautifully made and the shipping was fast, too.

Finally a coffee-brewing method that works!

*by Z*** on Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2015*

I found this filter from an Amazon search and found it to be far superior to the stiff, rimless stainless steel filter that I had been using. (The coffee from paper filters is close to worthless.) This one (the S Filter) does not leak and permits me to make coffee using a method that is truly the press method rather than a hybrid. With the leaky filter I had to use more coffee beans, with the finest espresso grind, to get it to brew at all. It was then difficult to depress the plunger and some of the resulting coffee ended up over extracted while the rest was under extracted. With the finer, mesh filter and the solid rim (the S Filter), the water does not leak and the resulting coffee is even. In addition, the vendor sent me a link to instructions for using the aeropress in an inverted fashion so it operates as a French press, rather than a drip method. This way I use 1/3 less coffee (which has gotten expensive) and a grind that is not as fine. The brewing time is less and the resulting coffee is evenly extracted. It does not take tremendous strength to depress the plunger; it is easy. I wish I had thought of that ingenious method myself. Note that this is better than a classic French press as the filter is finer and the coffee stays hotter during the process. It is also easier to clean and the "puck" drops easily into the compost pile. Also impressive is the fact that the service team followed up with me on the brewing method, which is rare for items with low price points that are not purchased in bulk. I travel with my aeropress and friends snicker until they taste the coffee. Then they buy their own.

Great filter, but think of as different from paper rather than a total replacement.

Been using this filter for about a week. Its pretty great and does exactly what it advertises well. Keep in mind though this is better as a companion to paper filters rather than a total replacement, and you do have to brew slightly different with it than with a normal filter.Advantages to using the S-Filter are that you get more of the oils in your cup, so the result is a coffee that is much more fuller of body and similar (but not exact) to a style of coffee you might expect to get with a french press. Except without all the silt that gets left behind in your cup! As a fan of the french press, this was my main motivation for getting one and its worked great for that. As a matter of fact, its totally replaced my french press as it has helped create a better more consistent cup of coffee than my french press could, while also using less grounds. In this sense, it does exactly as advertised and works great. The price is a tad expensive compared to the Able Fine, but I believe the S-filter is a slightly better method of metal filtering that is easier to clean and does a better job of keeping grounds out of your coffee. The build quality is also nice. The biggest disadvantage to the S-Filter though is that the normal brew process simply doesn't work with it - the water drains far to quick through the filter for you to do this. This means for best results you must use the inverted brewing method, which is a bit more time/effort consuming than normal. I happen to enjoy the inverted method so its not a huge deal for me, but for times when I want something simple or if I want to try out a recipe that involves the standard brewing method (most of the winning recipes for the recent Aeropress Championship for example), I have to use the paper filter. This is why I say this isn't really a replacement for paper, but more or less another option. You'll still need paper filters for when you want to do the normal brew method (part of the fun of the aeropress is trying new recipes!).There is one hampering issue I have with the S-Filter, is that it is very hard to get on. I would not recommend this filter if you don't feel comfortable getting a strong grip on the top of the aeropress while invert brewing, potentially causing spills. They mention using paper filters to help "loosen" things up before putting on the S-Filter, and this helps slightly, but its a bit of a chore to do and a lot of the time the excess heat from the invert method makes it still hard to fit the filter on top when doing a very time-sensitive brew. I've messed up making coffee several times with this filter due to the difficulty I had getting it on the press after I was ready to flip and plunge in the middle of the inverted method. Sometimes the coffee ended up spilling on my hands as the ONLY way I was able to get the filter on was by applying a lot of downward force with a cloth to get enough grip to get it to just barely lock on.However that said, when I can actually get the filter on it works wonderfully. I am hoping that after several months of using the S-Filter things will loosen up enough to make it so I don't need to have a backup plan ready if the filter doesn't go on the press in the middle of brewing. Its a hard issue to really solve, since the Aeropress was technically designed only for the paper filter in the first place. I would advise against using the S-filter if you have weak hands or aren't able to get a strong grip on the top of the press while brewing, or if you prefer using the standard method of brewing. However if these aren't issues for you, then the S-filter is excellent at allowing for a more full-bodied cup of coffee with the oils that a french press is more known for providing.EDIT: After using the filter for a month or so it now goes on much easier than it did the first month. Still going strong, still the filter I use most with the Aeropress.
