I have an outdoor feral cat house with straw inside.** A: We also shelter feral's, Yes I have placed one in a Styrofoam shelter that has straw in it. No problems and cat loves it. I placed it on the bottom, straw on top,works well, cat tunnels in making it's own comfort shape. Many of my friends have purchased it on my recommendation and not one has been unhappy. **Q: can this be placed under a cat bed or does it need to be on top of the fleece bed?** A: I think it needs to be placed on top for the thermostat to work properly. K&H says not to use any covering except for the fleece cover they sell. If you put it underneath the pet bed you could damage the unit.
