When it arrived I found it was much deeper than I needed. Succulents have shallow roots and need really good drainage to prevent root rot so I didn't want to fill it up with dirt or waste my good succulent potting soil. Putting rocks inside would have made it really heavy plus I didn't have any. I brainstormed and came up with something light like pieces of Styrofoam, and I wanted something that wouldnt clog the drainage hole. I did a search and found these little balls. Perfect! I filled the planter a little over half way up using almost the whole box of balls, and put a coffee filter over the top to prevent the soil from falling into the spaces. Then I finished planting the succulents.
