If you look at the pictures in the reviews you will we that the vest is mostly on the front half of the dog. Allowing the chest to float and the butt to sink results in raising the head as long as the dog is conscious. A full length vest would allow the head to go down. **Q: how do the sizes run?** A: from what I remember...a little large. My dog was right on the cusp of the next size up. She is around 60 lbs and very, very active. First use, she fell in and we easily hauled her back in. She also took a swim at shore and it allowed her to move easily.
