It's much better than shock with stabilizer, in my opinion. Here's why: - Using shock with stabilizer in it for extended periods will cause your cyanuric acid levels to rise above limits and leave your chlorine ineffective (useless, if high enough). - Calcium Hypochlorite is a better product than stabilized chlorine, and it's normally much more expensive than stabilized chlorine. It's only cheaper now because resellers bought out the stabilized shock and are now reselling it to you at a significant profit) - To use Calcium Hypochlorite, just stabilize your pool with cyanuric acid (available on Amazon). Once you reach the desired PPM (parts per million), you won't have to add any more. It does not evaporate (which, btw, is the problem with stabilized shock ... you keep putting in more cyanuric acid every time you shock). - Important: get your PH up to 7.4 (7.2 - 7.6), and keep it there, and your algae problems will diminish significantly. - Also, treat your pool with algaecide to keep algae from growing. Shock will kill algae, but its purpose is to kill harmful bacteria.
