But because the box was torn, punched, open on one end and abraded, I expected damage and losses. Actually, I found only one shelf out of the ten that had a crack it big enough to cause problems. I returned it and ordered three more, because this is one great book rack. It's very lightweight, so it's going to be easy on us if we move again, yet it's strong enough to hold all my textbooks. I did have to put shims under the front legs so that the bookcases will lean backwards. Otherwise they lean forward too much on the carpet, and are in danger of toppling. I advise screwing them into the wall studs if you're sure you're not going to move again. For me the shims and heavier books at the bottom seem to be doing the trick. It's true that there are no instructions to assemble these, but it's ridiculously easy. Even so, I made two mistakes. The five cross supports are not identical. One is sloped. That one goes at the top. So look at all of them before you start to assemble. Also, before making that first screw, make sure that the sides of the bookcase that have the widest holes are on the outside. That way the screws will be flush or below the surface when they are screwed all the way in. You can put it together even without these tips, and it will work just fine, but these two things will make it perfectly assembled. I now have four of these, and will say that the smell was only strong on two of them. I think if you keep them, after assembly, in a hot garage for a couple of days it will be fine.
