That happened to me when I bought a second-hand cordless Makita reciprocating saw. So I checked the brushes. They looked ok. So I checked the commutator (a ring of copper'bars' that are similar in shape to the end of the 'brush'). It was all glazed and black and glossy. Using only a pencil eraser I removed the glaze and scoring from the commutator. I simply placed the eraser into the hole where the brush goes while turning the motor, blew out the residue and replaced the brushes.. The saw works great now. These are original factory replacement parts from Makita. I can't imagine using anything better.
