My hair was natural white and I wanted more of a silver/gray tone to soften. First time I left it on for about 10 minutes and it was a nice soft silver, which I liked. Following week I left it on for 20 minutes and it was deeper gray but it seemed to have a slightly blue tone, that was cool I guess but I didn't like it on me. It's an excellent conditioner also. I put a little on my hand to see if I was going to have any skin reaction. If you wish to go lighter from dark, you have to get your hair lightened at the salon first.
