A silicon gasket is used to seal the joint between the glass and the steel base. It appears that the same type of silicone gasket is used to seal the glass rim to the stainless steel collar at the top of the unit. As long as the unit was designed and assembled properly, the existence of the silicone gasket is not a concern to me, because silicone gaskets and O-rings have a service temperature range of negative 100 degrees Fahrenheit to positive 400 degrees Fahrenheit. I did notice, however, that the stainless steel collar has surface rust on the inside of the lip, around the rim. Most, but not all, of the rust can be wiped off with a paper towel.
