    Not close enough

The best way for an author to present Dr Pang Ming's work, would be in Dr Pang Ming's own words. Unfortunately, this would not be of any value to those who do not speak Chinese. The second best way would be for the author to present Dr Pang Ming's own words, but translate them into English. The author could then use footnotes or comments to explain her understanding of Dr Pang Ming's words - this would allow the reader to read the original words and reach his own understanding of their meaning, or he could accept the author's interpretation, or alternatively, if he were still confused about the meaning of the original words, he could make further inquiries to obtain clarification. The third best way to present Dr Pang Ming's work, would be for the author to give her interpretation of his words - the reader would then have no idea how accurately the author had understood the intended meaning of the original words, or how accurately she had put her understanding of the original words into her own words and then translated this into English. Well, in this book, the author has not employed the first, second or even third best way of bringing the reader the original teachings of Dr Pang Ming. I consider the author's offering to be somewhere below fourth best, because she does not present a translation of the original words, but, according to the book's title, it presents a science BASED ON the original teachings of Dr Pang Ming. Another reason I consider the presentation of this book to be below fourth best, is because of the addition of the works by Joseph Marcello. While I have nothing against Joseph Marcello's health philosophy, and have in fact been using many of these protocols for many years, I believe this part of the book detracts from the book. This part feels like an add-on - it gives the reader the impression that somehow Joseph Marcello's ideas have been sanctioned by Dr Pang Ming - as if these ideas form part of the science of zhineng qigong - they do not, and it is misleading to convey the impression that they do. That this part of the book is not part of zhineng qigong should have been stated clearly and categorically - in fact, this section should never have been included as part of this book. Instead, it should have been a separate book, which the authors' could have recommended to readers. Then too, I bought this book to gain clarity on the exact performance and the correct mental picture one required for the actual movements - but instead of making some of these strange (to my western mind) concepts clearer, they are covered in a vague, general sort of manner, leaving me more confused than ever. This is where the authors should have gone into great and even minute detail - this is where it would be correct to speak down to the readers as if one were speaking to six year olds - to make absolutely certain that every detail was very clearly understood. Then, there are some statements in this philosophy with which I disagree - the problem for me is, how do I know whether I am disagreeing with Dr Pang Ming's philosophy, the authors' interpretation of the original philosophy or the authors' own philosophy, which is loosely based on the original philosophy? If Dr Pang Ming's original words had been used, I would immediately know the answer to that question, but as it is now, I have no idea at all. For example: On page 68 one reads: "When healthy chi is plentiful and circulating well, all unhealthy elements will die or disappear." "The chi sent forth from a practitioner can also kill germs and viruses." I do not believe that it is the chi per se that causes these effects. I believe it is the mental intent which causes these things to happen, with the chi being the tool of the mental intent - that is, the mental intent uses chi to accomplish what it wants accomplished. As an analogy, gasoline does not drive the car, the driver does, but no matter how skilled the driver is, he needs fuel to get the car to move. For me, it would be illogical for accept that chi accomplishes these things on its own, because if it were chi enhancing life, it would enhance all life, included the life of bacteria, viruses, etc., and if it were chi per se doing the killing, it would kill good and bad bacteria indiscriminately and thereby damage the digestive process. Or stated more simply, "How does chi (being pure energy) know what it should strengthen, and what it should kill?" There are other points of philosophy and logic with which I disagree - but, again, with whose philosophy am I disagreeing ?I have a number of books and DVDs in Dr Pang Ming's own words, and he is quite capable of saying exactly what he wants to say - so, I don't understand why his own words could not simply have been quoted in this book.Perhaps I am being a little harsh on the authors, seeing as the cover states, "Based on the Original Teachings of Ming Pang", and "Based on" can be interpreted in many ways - loosely based on, roughly based on, somewhat based on, etc., but when I read "The Original Teachings", then I expect the work to be very closely based on those teachings.

There is so little literature about Zhineng Qigong and this book reflects the teaching of what Dr. Pang Ming offers for us westerners who can not read any of his books. It is well written and gives great insides to the teaching for the practicioner and a good inside about Zhineng Qigong to those who want to get to know it. As a practitoner I am greatful to the authors for this book.
