This Is Ireland Review: A delightful Irish installment to a beautiful series - Let me start out by saying I love this book and my toddler loves the illustrations. Every day, we sit and I read him one of our special picture books. I have several books in this “This is...” series and all are extremely charming. The Ireland installment is delightful, too. While some of the illustrations are “of a particular era” (illustrating taverns and a weapon for a kid’s book), I can certainly look past this because this book is a reprint from mid-century illustrations that are nonetheless charming. I have included photos of the pages I found of particular interest. The leprechaun and the illustration of the library were particularly great! In the back of the book is a page that spells out edits to the text (as of 2005). If you love vintage children’s book illustration as I do, this will be a welcome addition to your library. I dare say I learned several things about Ireland that I didn’t know before and it makes me want to visit! Final note: my photos were taken at night, so there’s a little bit of a rosy/yellow tint to the pages, but surprisingly the color isn’t too far off when I compared them in the daytime, since the images are fairly desaturated and the pages are a cream colored ivory that may be yellowing slightly. I still find the book lovely, though.
