### ⭐ A Tedious and Oversimplified Text

Had I not been required to read this book for a class, I would have abandoned it on a bus at my earliest opportunity.The authors mostly just discuss the topics in each chapter by defining words, then defining the words nested in those definitions, and so on ad nauseum. The chapters start to feel repetitive in their construction. First there's a limited consideration of biological factors relating to an issue. Then the psychological factors. Then the social factors. Over and over and over again. The biopsychosocial model can be an ingenious way to consider health, but to Sarafino and Smith it is a tedious parade of subheadings and bolded terms.But the far worse offense of this book is the way that it treats the topics it considers. The authors take every single opportunity at their disposal to reduce a nuanced and complex issue to a set of trite, oversimplified talking points. Their discussion of substance abuse spends the entire chapter emphasizing that drugs=bad. This assertion is barely even backed up with facts (a single, two paragraph section on the [exclusively bad] health effects of drugs, before 12 pages wondering how we can stop this "problem"). Likewise, their discussion of nutrition spends basically the entire chapter reiterating that fat=bad. The pages read not like scientific discussions of the issues, but like boring pronouncements.If the authors are aware of a single fact that disagrees with their simplistic view of human health, they seem to have made certain that it didn't grace the pages of this text.
